These are not edge cases. They happen on every pressurised flight, to every passenger, on every sector.

CABIN HUMIDITY AT CRUISE, DRIER THAN THE SAHARA
The air is stealing your water every time you breathe.
Cabin air is drawn from outside at altitude, where it holds almost no moisture, and it replaces the cabin volume every few minutes. Every breath out carries water the air will not give back, and your skin loses moisture to the same dry air continuously. This is insensible loss: it never registers as sweat or thirst, so nothing prompts you to replace it.
Two hours in, you are already behind.

EFFECTIVE CABIN ALTITUDE, YOU NOT THE PLANE
Your body spends the flight up a mountain.
Cabins are pressurised to the equivalent of 6 to 8,000ft, not sea level. Mild hypoxia at that altitude raises your breathing rate and can trigger increased urine output, both of which accelerate fluid loss. It is also why alcohol lands harder and why a dull cruise headache is so common. Ben Nevis is 4,400ft. You are living above it for eight hours.
Faster breathing into drier air is compounding loss.

You lose it without ever feeling thirsty.
Cool, dry air blunts the thirst response, and sitting still removes the cues that normally prompt drinking. Most passengers replace roughly a third of what they lose. The gap between what leaves and what you replace is what you feel on landing: the taxi headache, the puffy face, the fatigue after a day of sitting down.
Dry air switches your thirst alarm off. That is the trap.

FLUID COST OF ALCOHOL AT ALTITUDE
The free G&T counts double against you.
Alcohol and caffeine are diuretics, and the effect of alcohol is compounded at cabin altitude, where it also disrupts sleep quality more than it does on the ground. On top of a body that is already running a fluid deficit, one drink does the damage of two.

PART THREE · WHY WATER ALONE FAILS

Water leaves as fast as it arrives.

Your body retains fluid using electrolytes, chiefly sodium, which regulate where water goes and whether it stays. Plain water without electrolytes dilutes the blood, your kidneys read that as a surplus, and much of what you drink passes straight through. That is why you can drink cup after cup on a flight, visit the toilet all sector, and still land dehydrated.
